“Me, bossy?” she gasps. “You told me I was going to be your friend that first day.”

“I was stating a fact. After you called those kids out for making fun of me, I knew we’d be friends,” I shrug and begin to rub my hand up and down her back.

“I only told him the truth. How could he keep calling you dirty and stupid when he had on dirty holey clothes and he couldn’t spell idiot? He had no right calling you one,” she says of the memory.

“You were the only one to ever stand up for me,” I muse.

“You were a sweet boy. You were the only one that would play with me without picking on me,” she shrugs, turning her face up to look at me. “I guess we were a pair.”

I search her eyes, getting lost in their depths. Her words strike a chord inside me. I’ve always gone through life feeling and thinking I was alone. I like the sound of being a pair with her.

I lift up to dip my head to capture her swollen lips. I don’t think I’ll get my fill of this woman. We’ve spent most of the night burning up these sheets and here I am hard as a rock wanting more of her.

“I want you, but we better get ready to catch our flight. We can sleep on the plane,” I say against her lips.

She releases a loud groan, rolling off of my chest on to her back. I chuckle following her, instead of getting up to get ready. I can’t help being close to her. I reach for her thigh, pulling it over my hip.

“You remember so much about us, but you don’t remember your family or that night?” I ask the question that’s been rattling in my brain.

“Yeah. Augustine said I hit my head pretty bad. I was lucky he found me when he did,” she says.

“But you remember me?”

“Yeah, I don’t know. I always had memories of you. I think it was a happy time for me. I started to remember more once I found out who you were,” she replies thoughtfully.

“I’m glad you remembered me. I might be somewhere with a bullet in my head if you hadn’t,” I blurt out.

“You’re debt is paid. You don’t owe Skull a thing. I had the lawyer take care of it. Doesn’t mean trouble isn’t still coming for us. You’re just square on what you owe,” she informs me.

“Thanks,” I nod.

She gives a warm smile. It lights up her pretty brown eyes and places a glow on her brown cheeks. I reach to run my thumb across her full lips, wishing I could bottle that smile to carry with me through my life.

I wouldn’t dare dream that any of this will last past a year or the time it takes to get us out of danger. I’m still in awe of her allowing me inside of her. I feel like I’ve touched the edge of heaven and now they’re coming for me to claim the price of my transgression.
